General Rules & Conditions

1. Where the word Stampede is used in the following rules, the reference is to the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited.

2. The Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited is not in business for profit, and is operated for the sole purpose of aiding in the development of livestock and industries of the City and the Province. Exhibitors, concessionaires, and all other persons are only admitted in the park on the understanding that they are cooperating with the Stampede in the above objectives.

3. Exhibitors must at all times give the necessary personal attention to whatever they have on exhibit, and at the close of the Exhibition, must remove all their exhibits from Stampede Park.

4. Volunteers; Shareholders; Directors; Staff; and Sponsors of the Stampede may be entered as exhibitors/competitors.

5. The City Bylaw 4070 specifically states in part: "All electrical equipment which has a metal frame or enclosure must be properly grounded by means of three-wire cords and caps". Failure to comply with this requirement could mean cancellation of privilege to use electrical power. We are advised that this bylaw is applicable to exhibitors utilizing such equipment in Stampede Park.

6. In accordance with the City of Calgary Bylaw #57M92, the Agriculture Building is a non-smoking facility. Smoking is permitted in designated areas only.

7. As the prize list is published before all the breed societies or other specials may have been decided upon, some of the specials may have been included in the prize list in the same form as given at the previous show in anticipation of being again offered, but the Stampede will only pay same when received.

8. Stampede reserves the right to make any change deemed necessary with regard to prizes or conditions contained in the prize list, and also, reserves the right to deduct up to but not exceeding 25%, if it is found necessary to do so. Prizes donated will be awarded in full.

9. If there are insufficient entries in a class, classes will be combined or the class will be cancelled.

10. Exhibitors are responsible for proper care, presentation, and clean-up of their exhibits during their stay.

11. It is compulsory for exhibitors to wear the show numbers supplied by Stampede. Exhibitors are responsible for supplying the show number harness.

12. Stampede shall reserve the right to limit entries to facilities available. Priority will be given based on the date that entries are received at the Agriculture Entries office.

13. All entry fees must be paid in Canadian funds. Out-of-country entry fees should be submitted by Credit Card or money order in Canadian funds.

14. Complimentary bulk shavings will be available in the Agriculture Building. Hours are 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m during the Calgary Stampede Stock Show. Contact (403) 261-0135. Hours during other events may vary.

DEFINITION OF AN EXHIBIT
For the purpose of 2008 Stampede Agriculture Events, classifications and "exhibit" shall be interpreted as follows:

1. A unit of livestock qualifying for an entry into a class as specified in the classifications. Cow/calf classes in the Beef Cattle section are considered to be one exhibit for definition purposes. All registered animals, whether owned by one person or by more than one person (individually or jointly), are considered to be the production of the farm or breeding unit on which they are maintained.

2. For the purposes of the classifications, an "exhibitor" is any breeder or firm which owns and presents animals or farm produce for official placing by a judge at the time specified by the fair for judging.

3. For the purposes of the classifications, a "breeding unit" is defined as follows: In each classification where the same or common interests are involved in more than one breeding operation such operations are considered as one Breeding Unit. In all cases where there is any doubt that more than one breeding unit exists, the interpretation shall be that only one breeding unit exists. The responsibility of proof of separation of breeding units shall rest with the exhibitor(s).

4. "Purebred" means an animal that is purebred of the breed as determined by the by-laws of an association authorized to register animals of that breed.

5. The exhibit must be owned by and registered in the name of the exhibitor.

6. The exhibitor must produce the original Registration Certificate issued in the exhibitor's name to the Agriculture Manager or a representative of the Stampede when requested to verify the identification of the entry.

7. Exhibits must compete in proper class as to age. Animals shown in purebred classes must be owned by the exhibitor.

8. Tampering with exhibits: Every exhibitor, in consideration of the entry being accepted, specifically undertakes that no exhibit entered by the exhibitor has been or will be, before entering the judging ring, unethically fitted or artificially colored; and the exhibitor agrees to submit for inspection, before any inspector or inspectors appointed for this purpose by the Executive, any exhibit entered by the exhibitor, at any time required; and the exhibitor further agrees that the opinion of such an inspector or inspectors shall be final and conclusive and without recourse against the Stampede or any officers thereof, or any person appointed by the Executive to act in the matter in respect to any action which may be taken under the regulations as set herewith, and by entering the animal for exhibits herein releases the Calgary Stampede from all claims and demands whatsoever in connection with the disqualification of any animal under the provisions of this section. Any products/solutions/liquids administered internally to alter the conformation or weight of the animal is prohibited.

9. When the word "progeny" is used in the livestock classes, it is to be defined as referring to and meaning the direct descendant, as son or daughter.

10. In the "get of sire" and "progeny of dam" classes, ownership by exhibitor shall not be required unless otherwise stated.

11. Entry corrections must be submitted in writing directly to the Agriculture Entries Office 48 hours prior to the show or the weigh-in.

12. Stampede has the right to make the conditions more restrictive. This means that performance standards may be higher, or the minimum number of exhibitors or exhibits may be raised at the discretion of the Stampede.

13. Stall cards supplied by the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede must be posted above the livestock exhibits.

JUDGING
1. Judges are requested to familiarize themselves with the rules and conditions of the show and especially those rules bearing on the classes judged by them.

2. Exhibitors must ascertain at what time judging will take place; and no complaint or appeal based upon the statement that the judges have overlooked exhibits will be considered by the Calgary Stampede.

3. No person shall be permitted in the judging ring during the time of judging, except the directors in charge, judges, livestock superintendents and their assistants, agriculture department staff, persons in charge of exhibits and members of the press.

4. If two judges, working together in placing awards in any department, fail to agree they shall forthwith retire from the judging ring and the awards shall be placed by a judge appointed by the Calgary Stampede, whose decisions will be final.

5. Any person who attempts to interfere with or influence the judge while in the process of judging, or who at any time in Stampede Park, or within the judges hearing, in consequence of any award made by the judge, shall forfeit the right to any prizes to which they might otherwise be entitled, and may be excluded from exhibiting from one or more years thereafter. Judges are required to report any breach of this rule.

PRIZES
1. Any prize may be withheld when the judge is of the opinion that there is not sufficient merit in the entry exhibited to justify the prize.

2. Should a prize be found to have been obtained or awarded in error on the part of the judges, clerk, or director in charge, or by false evidence or misrepresentation, or a violation of any of the rules and conditions, the money will be withheld, or if paid in error, same must be refunded.

3. Prize Money will be mailed to exhibitors following the show.

4. All prize money will be paid in Canadian Dollars. Non-residents of Canada will be subject to a 15% withholding tax on all prize monies awarded as required by Revenue Canada.


MANAGEMENT RIGHTS
1. Any exhibitor shall, if requested by the Management, make a statutory declaration that the exhibits made by him/her are shown in accordance with the rules and conditions of the Stampede. In case any exhibitor refuses to make such a declaration, on being requested, all premiums awarded him/her shall be forfeited.

2. If required, exhibitors must give statutory declarations as to the age of their exhibits.

3. The Management reserves the right to remove from the park, exhibits, standing or shown, that may be deemed unsuitable or objectionable, without being assigned any reason. If any exhibit, standing or shown, has obtained admission through misrepresentation will forfeit any money paid for any unexpired term for space or stalls, and the Stampede shall be exonerated from any claim on the part of the exhibitor or purchaser. Abuse of livestock by exhibitors will not be tolerated and will result in immediate dismissal.

4. An exhibitor lodging a protest must submit it in writing to the Agriculture Administration Department before 10:00 a.m. the day following the cause of protest, and a receipt must be obtained. A protest must state plainly the cause of complaint or appeal and must be accompanied by a deposit of $100 which sum shall be forfeited to the Stampede, if the said protest is not sustained.

5. The Management shall have the power to decide all protests and withhold prizes if they are of the opinion that it is just to do so. The Management shall also have power to interpret the rules and make new rules if the printed rules do not cover any dispute or point which may be brought up. The Management may take action without protest being made.

6. Upon the discovery of fraud, deception or dishonest practice which may have affected or have been intended to affect the decision of the judges, the Management has power to withhold the award, and may prohibit the offending party or parties from exhibiting in any class for one or more years, and may also publish the names of such persons if deemed expedient.

7. The Management reserves the right to decide any point not covered by the rules and conditions in the prize list.

LIABILITY
1. All property of any kind entered for display or any other purpose shall be subject to the control of the Management, but in no case shall the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited, the directors, managers, and employees, (thereof), be held responsible for any loss, damage, or injury of any character to any such property while same is in Stampede Park, or any other time or place. If the property owners or others interested in property desire protection against damage or injury from fire or from any other cause, they must make their own arrangements. Though the Calgary Stampede will take reasonable precautions to ensure safety of articles or property from injury, loss or theft, the Calgary Stampede will give all the assistance in its power toward the recovery of the same, but will not make any payment for losses, damage or value thereof. Exhibitors desiring insurance must give the matter their personal attention.

2. Exhibitors or animals, machinery in motion, or exhibits of a combustible or explosive character and other exhibits liable to occasion accidents, injury or damage to persons coming in contact with them, shall guard their exhibits and protect the public from coming in contact therewith and every such exhibitor shall indemnify the Stampede from and against all claims and demands, costs, charges and expenses which it may incur, suffer, or be put to be reason of any accident, or of any persons being injured or suffering damage through or by reason of any such exhibit being not properly guarded or the public not being protected therefrom.

3. If any damage, loss or injury to person or property shall be caused by reason of any neglect, or willful act of any person, firm, or corporation, or their agents, representatives, servants or employees having liability, all persons causing same, or liable therefore, shall indemnify the said Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited.

4. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary herein contained, it is understood that each entrant, entry or exhibiting, or selling, waives all claims against Calgary Exhibition & Stampede, for any and all injury, loss, or damage which he, his employees, helpers and/or property may sustain, arising in any way out of the operations or activities of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited and indemnifies the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Limited, from and against any loss, or damage sustained by the said Stampede by reason of any claims made by any of his helpers, or employees or their executors, administrators, or assigns, and that any helpers or assistants introduced to or engaged by any entrant, exhibitors, or concessionaires through the said Stampede, its officers, or agents shall be at the sole risk and responsibility of such entrant, exhibitors or concessionaires.

5. An exhibitor renting space in Stampede Park by so doing agrees to the rules and conditions printed herein.

6. The serving and consumption of alcoholic beverages in a non-licensed area of a public building is illegal and in contravention of the AGLC regulations. Additionally, this practice poses liability and safety issues for all stakeholders (volunteers, agricultural representatives, youth and, you, the exhibitor). The Calgary Stampede, in partnership with these stakeholders, has a tremendous responsibility in portraying agriculture as a professional, entrepreneurial industry. We must uphold and be accountable for our actions and decisions.
